DIY Home Security Systems

Saving on a Home Security System

One of the main reasons many homeowners do not have a home security system has to do with cost, or should we say for many, the misconception of cost.  For people living on a tight budget, even knowing the benefits that an alarm system offers is often not enough to make it an affordable solution.  However, without a home security system in place, this means that people all over the country are doing without adequate home protection that could ultimately save lives.  The good news is that today new and innovative solutions for home security exist, thereby making this type of purchase more feasible. One of the main reasons many homeowners do not have a home security system has to do with cost, or should we say for many, the misconception of cost.

Remember, a home security system goes beyond keeping the actual property and personal belongings safe – it provides the homeowner and other people residing within the home complete peace of mind.  Obviously, there is no limit as to what a person would pay to protect the family but the bottom line is that if the money is not in the budget to have a home security system installed by a highly trained professional, then it is simply not in the budget – period.

However, a number of reputable companies now manufacture both wired and wireless home security systems that literally anyone could afford.  Of course, the more complex systems are going to be at the top of the price range but even systems that offer minimal features are better than having no protection at all.  Along with a full home system, you have several other options to consider.  For instance, one way in which intruders enter a home is through the garage.  You would be amazed at how many people spend thousands of dollars having a professional alarm system installed to cover all doors and windows but for some reason, the garage door is overlooked as a potential risk.

If you have good locks on the doors and double or triple pane windows but still have concern about security specific to the garage door, you could purchase a security system specifically designed just for the garage.  With this, the door would close automatically if accidentally left open after a determined amount of time.  For instance, if you set the garage security system for 10 minutes but after driving away or going to bed you remember the door was not shut, this system would close the garage for you.  In addition to a security system such as this being beneficial, most cost less than $100.

Another option is a motion sensor, which also costs less than $100.  The great thing about using sensors to protect the home is that installation is extremely easy.  Because of this, you could do the installation on your own and have the freedom to place the sensors wherever wanted, inside the home or outside on the property.  With this, if someone were to walk onto the property or enter the home, a light would become illuminated and a siren sound.

Although these light and siren sensors would not actually be a working security system, the intruder would have no way of knowing that.  Studies show that when motion sensor lights and sirens come on automatically, intruders run.  After all, criminals look for opportunities to get inside a home quickly and easily to get what they want without being detected.  Therefore, if lights have illuminated the property and sirens are blaring, you can be sure the attention being drawn to your home is not what an intruder wants.

Of course, if you want an actual home security system but simply cannot afford to spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, you might consider a wireless do-it-yourself system.  This alternative is excellent in that it offers an affordable solution for home protection but also a solution that is completely functional.  Because of the wireless design, installation of this home security system is easy and without wires, it could be installed virtually anywhere.  For this, the market offers a number of excellent systems that provide the same protection and peace of mind as a wired system but for less money.

DIY Home Security Systems

Today, a growing number of people are looking for affordable but also highly effective ways of protecting the home environment. For some, the primary concern is keeping the entire family safe while for others without a spouse or children, safeguarding personal possessions, or perhaps both. Unfortunately, crime has reached beyond boundaries of the big city. Although many parts of the country have seen crime rates go down due to public education and government programs, some responsibility for home protection still falls back on the homeowner.

If among the millions who want better home protection, a do-it-yourself security system would be an ideal solution. Although you could purchase a home security system from a company, considering that many of the do-it-yourself systems currently sold provide excellent protection and for less money, installing the system on your own makes perfect sense. Remember, if looking at a professionally installed system, the company representative that would conduct a home assessment and then make recommendations is going to do or say whatever it takes to close the deal.

However, by looking at various do-it-yourself home security systems, you would quickly discover several possibilities that would cover the same areas pointed out by the representative but without costing a fortune. The economy has resulted in families creating tighter budgets so for many a professionally-installed home security system is more a luxury although it is actually a necessity. This means people who need home protection feel they have no alternative but in truth, a do-it-self security system could be installed without going outside the budget while still having the protection deserved.

In addition to the traditional wired home security system, a newer and more innovative option has been introduced in the form of a wireless system. This type of do-it-yourself system is far easier to install and actually more beneficial for several reasons. For instance, without restrictive wiring, you could install this type of system literally anywhere. Because of this, some areas of the home or property that might otherwise not have coverage would not be fully protected.

Another advantage in choosing a do-it-yourself wireless security system for the home over a wired system is the actual installation. Because there are no wires to mess with, this type of system could easily be installed by anyone without electrical knowledge. Instead, this type of home security system runs solely on battery so as long as the battery is changed on a scheduled basis, the home, as well as the property would have the wanted protection.

In addition, although wired home security systems are designed with battery backup, too often people become so accustomed to the system running they forget to check or change the batteries. That means if power were to go out from a storm, construction, or even wires being cut by a potential intruder, the system would be disabled. However, knowing the wireless security system depends on the battery people tend to be more inclined to checking it often. Therefore, in some ways a wireless system offers better protection for the home and property.

Pros and Cons of Wireless Home Security

Although multiple choices exist for home security, the latest technology involves a wireless system.  This particular type of security has quickly become one of the most popular choices for a variety of reasons.  As with any investment, it would be to your advantage to learn the pros and cons so you understand the type of system needed and what it would provide, thereby making you feel confident in the decision made.

One of the greatest benefits of a wireless home security system is that without wiring, this type of system could be installed literally anywhere.  While wired systems are limited regarding placement, a wireless system could be installed in hard-to-cover areas around the home that might otherwise not be protected.  In other words, along with the home, this system would be ideal for outbuildings, pool houses, detached garages, or even areas around the property’s parameter.  Of course, without wires, this type of system could be moved whenever and wherever wanted.

Wireless home security is also beneficial in that multiple cameras could be operated from a single system.  In fact, leading security companies agree that a minimum of six cameras should be installed.  With this, obvious areas needing protection would be covered, as well as hidden areas.  If you decide to have the system installed by a professional, a representative would do an assessment and then recommend the best placement for cameras.  However, if you want to install the wireless system, remember that the cameras should cover entry points into the home, as well as dark places that would make great hiding spots for intruders to lay in wait.

Another advantage of a wireless security system is that without depending on wires for operation, if power to the home were to go out or someone were to cut the power, the system would never go down.  Although this type of security system does depend on batteries, as long as they are checked and changed regularly, the system would provide continuous protection.  Obviously, knowing the system is always watching over the home provides peace of mind.

You would also find that wireless security systems are more affordable than wired systems, especially if you decided to do your own installation.  Rather than pay thousands of dollars, you could purchase a high quality wireless system for less than $500 and within several hours, have everything installed and ready to use.  Therefore, if you want protection but need to stick to a budget, a do-it-yourself wireless system would be an excellent choice.

While a wireless security system has more pros than cons, it is still important to understand the few negative aspects.  For one, the majority of wireless systems do not connect to phone landlines.  Therefore, proper authorities to include law enforcement, fire, and medical rescue would not be notified in case of emergency.  Another drawback has to do with range.  Although coverage has improved dramatically for wireless home security systems, there are still some limitations.  Additionally, in cases of bad weather, the signal associated with this type of system could be disrupted.  Finally, for the cheaper systems, appliances running off radio frequencies could also cause interference.
