Buying Door Hardware

Door Hardware Buying Mistakes

Not giving much thought to the purchase of door hardware is a common mistake. Most people make uninformed decisions that result in a mismatched or uncoordinated look within the home. To ensure the entire home has a cohesive look, which ultimately enhances overall appearance while supporting different architectural features of the home and room décor, it is essential that door hardware be given the same level of attention and respect as when buying more obvious and expensive items.

With the tough economy, most people live on a restricted budget of some degree. As a result, when shopping for door hardware the cheapest thing found is what is purchased. The outcome is having hardware that more than likely will not last long or hardware that quickly loses its aesthetic appeal. You know the old saying, “You get what you pay for”, which applies to even something as basic as door hardware.

Unless you want a door knob, lock, lever, etc that does not function properly or hardware that begins to fade, bend, rust, or become damaged in one way or another, be sure to buy the best quality hardware you can afford. However, with such high demand for quality items but at a discounted price, manufacturers of door hardware now make a multitude of options to fit any budget. Because of this, you can stay within your spending range but still end up with quality hardware that will work correctly and last a long time.

Another common mistake is people purchasing the first door hardware they like. Often, hardware and home improvement companies position display items the center of aisles to attract buyers so without much consideration, a variety of door hardware pieces are bought but once taken home and installed, it quickly becomes obvious that the home is now completely mismatched. With this, the overall look and feel of the home is disrupted in that no design flow has been created.

Often people purchase the wrong material, which equates to the wrong color. If you look at door knobs or levers, they are often the focal point of the door. Now, if you had a home filled with rich, mahogany furniture, jewel tones, and sophisticated artwork, choosing a door knob or lever made of pine would be a huge mistake. Instead, a mahogany door knob or lever would be the ideal choice. With this, one more element would be added to complete the overall design or style of the home.

The goal is to choose door hardware, not only the knobs and levers, but also backplates, hinges, locking mechanisms, etc that coordinate with the home. Additionally, rather than choose a different type, style, material, or finish for each door, you want to install the same door hardware throughout the home. Certain choices such as brushed nickel, pewter, or brushed brass are universal, meaning they complement virtually any style and/or color theme.

Finally, make sure the design of the door hardware also complements the home. If the style were Victorian, then antique hardware or perhaps reproduction pieces would be perfect. For a contemporary home, glass or crystal door knobs would be the ideal way of enhancing the home. If the home had a shabby chic style, door hardware to include a ceramic knob would fit in perfectly. Because door hardware is so readily available and offered is such a broad range of choices, you could find virtually anything needed.
