Save on Energy Costs by Using Door and Window Awnings

by Don Miller

An excellent option for cutting the amount of energy used in the home, which means not spending as much each month on utility bills, is by installing door and/or window awnings.  Awnings have been used for years and while initially more for appearance, as well as to create a shaded area so spending time outdoors with family or friends is more comfortable.  Today, door, and window awnings have been created in innovative materials and designed differently so not only would you get excellent shade, but also with a wide range of colors and patterns, you will find the perfect energy-saving solution that actually complements the home.

One of the best options for window, and door awnings specifically to save on energy is brands that are made with UV protection.  The way these awnings are made is that sunlight is actually blocked, along with glare.  The result is having a door, and/or window awning that can actually cut glare by 95% and the sun’s heat by 77%.  Because of this, the interior of the home remains much cooler than it would without the awning so the air conditioning unit does not kick on as often.  Obviously, this means the level of energy being used is decreased dramatically, which equates to lower utility bills.

Many of the more popular awnings being sold are also designed as retractable, with the majority of those being operated electronically.  The benefit is that the awning can be rolled out with the push of a button to provide protection during the hottest times of the day and then rolled back in once temperatures cool down.  Now, keep in mind that while door and window awnings are extremely beneficial to block out sun and heat in the summer, they can also help reduce energy consumption in the winter.  When rolled to the open position, awnings would also help block wind and cold rain that would cause the interior of the home to be too cold.

The great thing is that most brands of door and window awnings can be installed as a homeowner’s do-it-yourself project.  While earlier models were bulky and complicated, the brands today are extremely easy to install, being up and ready to enjoy within an hour.  Along with the retractable type of door and window awning, you might also consider having half-umbrella awnings installed on other windows.  These awnings are much smaller and stationary.  However, when installed over windows, especially those that get a tremendous amount of afternoon sun, you would also benefit from less energy being used.

Although you could purchase a freestanding door and window awning, we strongly recommend you consider investing in a retractable type.  Most of these awnings are extremely well made and come with a long-standing warranty.  In addition, be sure the awning of choice is designed with UV protection and from there, choose the color and/or pattern wanted, as well as the size needed to block out the greatest amount of sun and cold air.

With a retractable awning, you would still enjoy the traditional benefits of earlier awning types, meaning you would have a great space for visiting with family or entertaining friends.  You would also appreciate the privacy that awnings such as this offers.  Then adding in the benefit of the awning being energy efficient due to UV protection, you can see that door and window awnings are without doubt an excellent investment.
