Electric Lawn Mower Repairs

by Don Miller

Your lawn mower is a piece of machinery, and like all pieces of machinery they will eventually need to be repaired. The biggest problem you will run into is that electric mowers do not have the same problems as gas powered mowers. And you also may find that repair shops don’t usually have the same kind of experience or expertise with electric mowers either. But you if you know how to go about repairing an electric lawn mower than you will save yourself a lot of time with repair shops that can’t help you.

Probably the most common reason for repairing an electric lawn mower is that it overheats. This is usually down to one cause with an electric mower. As the mower cuts the grass the clippings and other debris can get caught in the air vents. Since the air can’t vent the engine will overheat and shut down. Repairing an electric lawn mower with this problem means that you need to clear the debris. If possible you need to remove the air vent casing and clean it. If the casing cannot be removed then use an air compressor to blow the debris free.

Another common problem to require repairing an electric lawn mower is that the mower will not start. Usually this is caused by a connection problem somewhere in the mower. If your mower has a power cord then the first thing to do when repairing an electric lawn mower is to check that the cord is properly plugged in at both ends. Also check that the outlet has enough power to run that mower. If it won’t start after that then the next step in repairing an electric lawn mower is to check all the electrical connections that you have access too. Be sure to wear insulated gloves while you do this. Check that everything is properly connected and look for broken and frayed wires ass well. Unplug any connections a few times to clear it of any dirt or corrosion. If you find any noticeably corrosion than you will need to replace the part.

Next on your do it yourself list of repairing an electric lawn mower is a mower that stops halfway through cutting or slows down. The simplest solution is that there may be too much accumulated grass on the underside of the deck. When this buildup happens the motor has to work harder to cut and it cuts off. Unplug the mower and clean out the deck. Then be sure to reset the breaker of the mower and try it again. Another problem is that the vibrations from the running mower may be causing some connections to come loose. When you are repairing an electric lawn mower with this problem you need to unplug it and check the connections. If the problem is recurring then you can secure them with electrical tape to keep them in place.

I have a 12 amp electric Yard works lawn mower that starts immediately however once up to max rev it cuts out and then immediately starts again. I have removed all debris under the mower and where the vents are on top but still having the same symptoms. I am wondering if the sensor that overheats is faulty? I have what I think is the sensor but need to confirm if it is the tall cylynder approximately 7 ” tall with two blade connectors on the top and if this indeed may be my problem?
Thanks

Yeah, I’ve got same problem and also suspect the temp sensor, however the one you describing sounds like the capacitor? – check on side and if there is a value in microF (would probably use the greek symbol for micro) then it is confirmed to be the capacitor. Have you resolved yet? Might assist with my problem too?!
