Easy Steps to Secure Your Home

Simply put, when it comes to home security systems, you could spend thousands of dollars on the most innovative and state-of-the-art system available but unless other things are in order, the system would ultimately fail. In other words, the home security system you purchase is only as strong as its weakest link. To begin, consider security systems very carefully.

While most people want something with all the bells and whistles, if the system is overly complex people will not use it as often or as they should. Therefore, look for a solid home security system that will provide the level of protection needed but be realistic about the time and effort involved for everyone in the home. In addition, consider the following steps that would allow any home security system to perform optimally.

* Home intruders look for opportunity. Whether walking or driving through a neighborhood, the one thing each would be watching for is an unoccupied home. Therefore, even if gone for a couple of days, make sure it appears as if someone is home. To accomplish this, stop all mail and newspaper deliveries, use indoor and outdoor timers for lights, but also the television, radio, etc. If gone longer, make sure someone is scheduled to mow the lawn and even ask a neighbor to park a car in your driveway while away.

* You also want to make your home a challenge to reach so potential intruders would move on to a different property. The most obvious option would be a tall, locking fence but there are other ways of putting up defenses. For instance, use tall trees that have stickers around the back or darker areas of the property, install a number of motion lights, and consider a home security system with a camera so real time activity would be captured.

* Lighting is a key element associated with every home security system. Because of this, it is imperative that along with any illumination the system provides that you have lights installed at all entry points into the home. This means that all doors and windows would have some degree of illumination. While this does not automatically stop a person from breaking in, it certainly serves as a good deterrent.

* Strong locks on all doors are also a critical part of keeping the home safe and secure. The best lock on the market is the deadbolt, which has always been an excellent choice but over the years, this particular type of lock has evolved where today, it comes in a variety of materials, designs, and features.

* If your home has a sliding glass door, you instantly have a unique challenge. While glass doors provide clear views to the outside while allowing natural light into the home, they are also the one area that is compromised most. The problem is that some sliding glass doors can actually be lifted off the tracks, providing an intruder with an easy way in. To prevent this, locate the screws at the top and bottom inside the door that keeps it in the track, adjusting so the door could not be lifted high enough to clear the track and provide an opening. Additionally, invest in a special device that stops the door from being opened. Although a broomstick works, it would be worth the investment to purchase an actual stop.

* You also want to pay attention to the windows in your home. The number of people that accidentally leave one, if not more windows unlocked is staggering. Although burglars can typically get past most window locks, to improve security of the home and make the home security system more effective, invest in heavy-duty locks that would be challenging to open from the outside.

* Finally, make sure as you enhance security on the doors and windows of the home that you not overlook the garage door. The garage is yet another point of entry that most homeowners overlook. Therefore, spend just as much time in securing this door as you would all the other doors and windows leading into the home.
