DIY Kitchen Sinks

Kitchen sinks are a basic design element of the kitchen and while most people never think twice about appearance or functionality, the truth is that based on material, style, and features, kitchen sinks would have a unique look and functionality.  However, no matter the material, style, or added features, mounting of kitchen sinks is done in one of two ways to include surface mount and under-counter mount.  For the surface mount installation, the rim would be visible on the countertop whereas for the under-counter installation, the rim would not be visible.

Some people like the traditional look that surface mount kitchen sinks provide.  If you want to install new sinks on your own, this method of installation is usually the easiest.  However, other people prefer the under-counter method for installing kitchen sinks because of the clean and finished look it provides.  With the rim not being visible, the sink appears to be a continuous part of the countertop.  One primary advantage of this installation method is that with no seam, cleaning is much easier.

Along with the two options for installing kitchen sinks, you would also have a broad range of materials.  The most popular is stainless steel because it looks great, coordinates with any kitchen design, it is easy to clean and maintain, and will last forever.  However, sinks in today’s market are made in a wide variety of materials, each with unique qualities.  For instance, another popular choice is copper and as long as the sinks are properly sealed, the beautiful amber color would last.

Granite kitchen sinks have also grown in popularity.  Although the price for sinks made of granite is more than you would pay for stainless steel or porcelain, granite offers something different.  Granite has been used in kitchen designs for a long time but what makes this particular material so unique is that it coordinates with any kitchen design.  For instance, granite sinks look beautiful in traditional homes just as contemporary homes.  Kitchen sinks made from granite are also strong and durable, and they come in wonderful color choices.

Brass is another longstanding favorite material for kitchen sinks but like copper, this material is typically more expensive than standard choices.  However, the versatility that brass sinks is a huge consideration.  Sinks of this material fit perfectly with a country, traditional, transitional, or contemporary style home, making it another top choice.  Brass is also strong and durable so it kitchen sinks made from this material would easily last the life of the home.

Along with the two installation types and various materials used to make kitchen sinks, you would also have a choice of different sizes and shapes.  For instance, most sinks are made to be square, rectangular, and oval, and they come in single and double configurations.  However, options found today are much greater.  As more and more homeowner’s have expressed the desire for something different, many manufacturers have stepped up to the plate by designing unique shapes, as well as configurations.  In addition, kitchen sinks being designed today come with a variety of features to make time spent in the kitchen more efficient and enjoyable.
