Kitchen Lighting Ideas and Tips

After deciding to update your kitchen, you are now faced with multiple decisions. If the change would be a full kitchen remodel, you would need to consider the type of flooring, wall color or finish, style of cabinets, material for countertops, and of course, the best kitchen lights. Going through a process such as this can be daunting but shopping for new kitchen lights should also be fun and exciting, knowing that you have so many incredible options from which to choose.

Unfortunately, the value that the right type of kitchen lighting offers is something that many homeowners overlook. The fact is that of all rooms in the home, it is essential to consider fixtures carefully, choosing those that would provide the appropriate level of illumination while also adding style. The good news is that because there are so many possibilities, you can easily find exactly what you want so your kitchen transformation ends up being more than expected.

In addition to style, another key factor for new kitchen lighting is strategic placement. When installed in the right location of the kitchen, lighting would serve multiple purposes. With the right placement, the kitchen would have the necessary full room illumination, along with lighting used for various tasks such as prepping and cooking food, as well as to accent special areas. Having kitchen lighting in the right area would also eliminate unwanted shadows.

Cove lighting is a popular option in that the illumination would be distributed throughout the kitchen evenly. However, cove lighting is also a great choice when trying to emphasize architectural features of the room. For instance, if the kitchen ceiling is recessed, if there were any arches over the sink area, or some other unique design, cove lighting would be a great consideration. If you decide to use lighting of this type for the kitchen, it would be important to choose the right optical reflector, as well as lampshade to go along with the overall ratio of space in the kitchen.

Another great choice for illuminating the entire kitchen is with recessed lighting. For this, a round hole is drilled out of the ceiling and inside, a lighting can placed, which would hold the actual light bulb. Again, recessed lighting can be used to enhance architectural features of this room but one of the advantages of recessed lighting is that because of the way it sits in the ceiling, it could also be installed over the sink, above open cabinets, etc.

Task lighting is often installed along with the primary lighting, which is used to provide stronger or broader illumination in a particular area of the kitchen. As an example, if you prep food in one specific area of the countertop, then task lighting could be installed beneath the cabinet of that area. When turned on, only that countertop space would be highlighted, making it easier and more convenient to work. Typically, task lighting is such that it is designed with individual lights so they could be adjusted as needed. In addition, most types of task lighting are now designed as glare-free, so the illumination would be exactly what you need.

The bottom line is that with all the different types and styles of light fixtures now designed just for the kitchen, you can choose whatever is needed for the type of illumination wanted. If the kitchen also serves as a dining room, then you might consider having a dimmer switch installed. That way, you could turn the light up all the way when cooking or having a family dinner, or down to produce a soft glow to help set romantic ambience when having a nice couple’s dinner.
