DIY Motorized Blinds Repair

by Don Miller

Sometimes your motorized blinds will fail to work. There are a lot of these problems that you can fix yourself. Motorized blinds repair is sometimes not as complicated as it sounds. More serious problems like damage to the head rail may still need to be taken care of by a professional but you can complete simple motorized blinds repair. What you will need is a new battery, a screwdriver, and replacement parts for the motorized compartment.

The first step to motorized blinds repair is to check for common problems. Don’t start removing parts yet because you don’t know which part is causing the problem. Some quick troubleshooting will identify where the trouble is so you can make a more accurate motorized blinds repair. If you press the controls, do the blinds work properly?  If the device seems to do nothing then the battery might no longer be working. Replace it with the new battery and see if this allows the blinds to work. If your motorized blinds don’t have a battery and are wired to the house’s circuitry then make sure that circuit breaker is turned on. If you are using a remote and the blinds are not functioning then the remote battery may need to be replaced.

Another thing to troubleshoot in motorized blinds repair is if there are any damaged slats or clips. If you have plastic slats they can be easily damaged if you simply apply too much pressure to them. If you have kids or pets they can accidentally damage even the sturdiest blinds while they play. In order to complete your motorized blinds repair then you need to replace any broken or damaged slats. Simply remove the broken slat from its holding clip and press a replacement firmly into the clip. If the clip is plastic then be very careful not to damage it while removing and replacing slats. If the clip is damaged then unhook it from the head rail in order to remove it and then a new one into place.

Next on your list with motorized blinds repair is to replacing the head rail chain if it has been damaged. You’ll know it’s damaged is the slats are not tilting correctly or won’t tilt at all. Please keep in mind that with some manufacturer’s warranties replacing the head rail chain may invalidate any remaining warranty time. But if this is not a concern then remove all the individual vanes and then remove the chain. Place the replacement chain in the same manner the old one was positioned and then attach the slats back onto it following the previous alignment.

The final common motorized blinds repair you may need to make is to replace a broken motor. You can either have it repaired by a professional or just replace it with a new motor. Do some price shopping first since replacing the motor might be more expensive than a repair from beginning to end. Use a service manual from the manufacturer to replace the motor correctly if you decide this is the right motorized blinds repair to make.
