Importance of proper drainage for concrete driveways

0

A concrete driveway is a major investment that lasts for decades if properly installed and maintained. The important factor in ensuring the longevity of a concrete driveway is having adequate drainage. Water that collects and stands on a concrete driveway leads to cracks, crumbling, and other structural damage over time. Proper drainage prevents water buildup and allows the concrete to properly cure and harden after installation.

Importance of drainage during construction

Drainage needs to be considered right from the start when installing a new concrete driveway. The base preparation is key for allowing proper drainage. Excavation should be extensive to allow for a gravel base to be installed. A depth of at least 4 to 6 inches of gravel should be used and compacted down using a vibrating mechanical plate. It creates a sturdy foundation and allows water to drain away from the concrete slab.

On top of the gravel base, a sub-base layer of sand or crushed rocks about 1 to 2 inches thick further aid drainage. Perforated plastic drainage pipes must be installed on this sub-base layer running down the length of the driveway. These drainage pipes help divert excess ground water away from the concrete slab. Proper slope or pitch running from the middle of the driveway down to the edges should also be built at this stage, with a minimum slope of 1/4 inch per foot. It allows water to run off the sides of the concrete into drainage ditches or storm drains.

Maintaining drainage after construction

The drainage system for a concrete driveway shouldn’t stop once construction is complete. To keep your concrete in good shape for years to come, you’ll need to maintain proper drainage and prevent standing water issues.

  • Keep drainage ditches and culverts around the driveway clear of debris. Clogged ditches prevent proper water runoff. Routine inspection and cleaning is essential.
  • Use sand or gravel to fill any minor depressions or low spots that develop in the concrete over time.
  • Routinely clean out drainage pipes and catch basins around the driveway to remove built-up sediment and debris.
  • Re-apply driveway sealer regularly, about every 1 to 3 years. It helps keep the concrete more impermeable to water absorption and damage.
  • Address any cracks that develop using concrete caulk or patch compounds. Cracks allow water intrusion, which erodes the base under the concrete.
  • Keep landscaping around the driveway trimmed and maintained. Plant roots or excessive vegetation along the edges can impede proper drainage.
  • Consider using a concrete driveway protector solution once or twice a year. These protective coatings create a hydrophobic barrier that prevents water absorption into the concrete.

As you see, proper drainage benefits concrete driveways Sydney both cosmetically and structurally from the time they are installed until decades later. Following the best practices outlined here will lead to maximum performance and longevity for this large home investment. Be sure not to cut corners when it comes to proper drainage.
