The type of floor to choose for each housing area depends significantly on the use of that area. Understanding it is elementary. Not all feet are non-slip, not all are resistant to moisture, some are very cold, others can store dirt, not all are suitable for underfloor heating, etc., so parameters like these are the ones to consider when looking for the perfect floor to install at home.
Here are some tips to determine what flooring is best for each area. In this case, we will consider PVC, laminate, ceramic and carpet floors.
How to choose the ideal type of floor for each space in your home?
LIVING ROOM
Usually, the rooms have giant windows and receive direct sunlight from changing temperatures. Likewise, it is the place in the house where there may be more traffic of people at a specific time (a family reunion). Therefore, it can be considered a perfect area to install a residential floor of medium or high resistance in its use layer, which gives it the ability to resist the traffic to which it will be exposed without damage.
Remember that this is one of the most public areas of your home, so you must make a good impression. And that, being a meeting space, there may be some spillage of drinks or food, which requires that the floor is preferably resistant to humidity and changes in temperature and easy to clean since it does not want a visible, permanent stain.
Our recommendations are:
- SPC, LVT or Roll vinyl floors or tiles. They are made of PVC and have a very high resistance to humidity; they are effortless to clean and maintain, they tolerate high traffic, they are thermo-acoustic and resist knocks and scratches, and, in addition, they have a luxurious appearance, which can be made of wood in various colours and designs.
- Ceramic floors. It is highly resistant to humidity; however, it can be prone to slipping and causing accidents. To avoid this, it is essential to look for a floor that has a textured surface. In terms of tolerance against bumps and scratches, a strong impact with a heavy element could likely cause a tile to break and, therefore, the entire floor must be replaced.
- Laminate flooring. They have a high resistance to scratches and are non-slip; however, they are not 100% waterproof, so it is essential to clean the liquid residue quickly to avoid leaks that damage the floor forever.
KITCHEN
Being an area of heavy traffic and with a high probability of liquid spillage, kitchens require particular floors, such as vinyl or ceramic floors, designed to withstand the everyday hustle and bustle of this type of space.
In this case, it is essential to consider that your floor withstands humidity, scratches, splashes and constant footsteps, as well as being non-slip to avoid accidents.
Our recommendations are:
- Vinyl floors SPC, LVT, Roll or tiles. They are made of PVC. They perfectly resist humidity, and they are super easy to clean. They tolerate high traffic and are thermoacoustic. They resist bumps and scratches, and they look fabulous too. So if you want your kitchen to be as striking as the rest of the house, this is your best option.
- Ceramic floors. It is resistant to humidity and effortless to clean and maintain. It is recommended that it have a textured surface to prevent slipping. Falls of heavy elements can probably cause fractures and spalling in the tiles.
TOILETS
As in the kitchen, bathrooms require floors with excellent resistance to humidity and traffic. It is easy to imagine that the moisture stored in a bathroom is more significant than any other interior area of the house unless you have a swimming pool, Turkish bath or sauna.
For bathrooms, installing vinyl and ceramic floors may be the best option since carpets, and hardwood floors warp and weaken in the constant presence of water.
Our recommendation is:
- Vinyl floors SPC, LVT, Roll or tiles. The best option, in this case, maybe to install vinyl tile or strip flooring so that your bathrooms have an excellent appearance and are durable. It also allows easy cleaning and maintenance.
- Ceramic floors. They are also a perfect option as long as a textured floor is used that prevents slipping.
BEDROOMS
Rooms do generally not have as many demands as in other spaces. Therefore it is possible to install any floor. However, being a place of rest, it is essential to create a comfortable and clean environment.
The visual and physical warmth of these spaces is essential for good rest, but other parameters must be considered when choosing the floor to install, for example:
- What to do when the room is for a child in the exploration and development stage, where there will surely be spills of liquids, food and even paint or plasticine?
- What happens when there are young people who are passionate about music or dance?
- What happens when someone with an immune or respiratory disease lives at home and requires special asepsis?
All these are specific needs that must be taken into account; therefore, our recommendation is:
- Natural wood floors. These floors provide warmth to spaces and reduce noise; however, they are not ideal for installation in areas with children since they do not have high resistance to scratches or moisture.
- Vinyl floors SPC, LVT, Roll or tiles. They are an excellent option since they provide warmth, isolate noise, are easy to clean and, in addition, they meet high standards of asepsis since germs or bacteria do not develop there. And, if any of the tiles or strips have been damaged beyond repair, the part can be easily uninstalled and replaced with another. It’s great!
- Carpets. Carpets create welcoming spaces and isolate footsteps, but cleaning them is complex, and asepsis levels are deficient. Imagine removing the remains of paint or plasticine that remain between the fibres.
- Ceramic floors. Although they are easy to clean and may look great, they are cold and increase the sound of footsteps, affecting rest.
